Dr. Zariffa develops technology to restore function after spinal cord injury and stroke
On Sunday, September 8, 2024 the University Health Network will host its annual Rally for Rehab fundraiser presented by BMO at Toronto Rehabilitation Institute’s Rumsey Centre.
Attendees will hear incredible stories of perseverance from former Toronto Rehab patients who overcame life-altering injuries; engage in family-friendly activities like face painting; and participate in a brisk walk to support critical care at Toronto Rehab and life-changing research at the KITE Research Institute.
The “Why I Rally” series highlights the motivations of scientists, clinicians, and healthcare professionals participating in this crucial fundraiser.
We’ve connected with KITE Senior Scientist and Chair in Spinal Cord Injury Research at UHN Dr. José Zariffa to discuss why he’s participating in Rally for Rehab.
Why are you participating in the 2024 Rally for Rehab?
I want to raise awareness of how many people are impacted by the work done at KITE and Toronto Rehab. Nearly everyone will have someone close to them affected by disability or aging. It’s not always appreciated how important rehab care and research are, and the Rally for Rehab is an opportunity to get that message out to people.
What is your primary area of research at KITE?
I am a biomedical engineer and I develop technology for neurorehabilitation. We’re interested in creating tools that can help measure the function of the nervous system. Our particular areas of focus include spinal cord injury and hand function.
How will the patients we serve at Toronto Rehab benefit from this work?
Our work will primarily benefit patients who have experienced neurological injuries, such as spinal cord injuries and strokes, by helping identify effective and personalized rehabilitation strategies. Some of our research also has applications in controlling advanced prosthetic limbs after amputations.
Who will you be rallying with this year?
I hope to convince some of my family members, but my kids are teenagers so my influence is limited at the moment… Fortunately I have many wonderful colleagues to rally with!
How important are fundraising events such as this one?
The operations of hospital research institutes like KITE are funded largely through donations, so fundraising is absolutely essential to being able to do the work that we do. The Rally for Rehab is a fantastic opportunity for the public to learn about rehab and help support this sector.
